An excellent article on the current Iraq crisis. I particularly like this:
It is interesting that the oligarchy presents Iraq as (a) a terrible threat to the world with unlimited capacity for raining down death and (b) a nation with a demoralized and scattered army that we can take over in a matter of weeks using our fine new weapons systems and maybe a soldier or two.
The astute Tom Tomorrow explains the current administration's position as one that demands Orwellian "doublethink". I couldn't agree more. Let's all hope this blows over in a few days. In the meantime, Bush hoped to appoint a hard-line right-wing Texas judge (why are they always from Texas?!) to the Fifth Court of Appeals, which thankfully was rejected by a narrow vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee. A Wag the Dog maneuver perhaps? Bush, of course, would never lower himself to something like that...
